Build your terrarium · four questions

Build your terrarium in four answers.

Which jar you need depends on the light in the room, the space on the shelf, whether you have kept one before, and what you want growing inside it. Answer four questions and you get the kit we would put in your hands, with the reasoning and the prices in front of you.

Question 1 of 4

Where will it live?

Light is the one thing you cannot correct later, so it decides what goes in the jar. A sealed terrarium is a greenhouse: it keeps the light and it keeps the heat.

Choosing one moves you on.

Question 2 of 4

How much room do you have?

Volume is what keeps a closed jar stable, so this one matters more than it sounds. If the shelf is tight, measure it before you answer.

Back changes the answer above.

Question 3 of 4

Have you kept one before?

This changes the recommendation more than anything else you will tell us — not whether we recommend anything, just what.

There is no answer here we have not heard.

Question 4 of 4

What do you want in it?

Pick as many as you like, then continue. We will tell you honestly which of them a sealed jar will take and which it will not.

One pick is enough to continue.

What happens with your answers

Nothing is sent, stored or sold.

The four answers live in this page and nowhere else: no account, no email address, no follow-up. The recommendation is worked out in your browser, so closing the tab clears it completely. Back changes an answer, and Start again puts you at question one with nothing remembered.

Two things are true of every jar we sell, whatever your result says: it wants bright light and never direct midday sun, and it wants far less water than people give it. Everything we recommend is something we stock — the prices in the result are the prices in the shop, delivery is free over £60, and live moss arrives alive or we replace it.

Would rather be shown than told? The Saturday workshop is two and a half hours at the long bench, six places, everything provided, and the £65 comes off any vessel you buy on the day — book a place. If you would rather read first, the build guides in the journal cover the same ground at length, starting with the one about water.
